My father Guy Amirthanayagam (1927-2003) was a critical pioneer in a field he called 'contact literature,' cross-cultural literature written natively in English, for example, in the context of the British Empire and the Commonwealth. Much of this literature came to be classified, less usefully, as 'colonial' or 'post-colonial'.
